Wiring a single phase motor to drum switch My question isn't about phase conversions but i figured this board had the most knowledgable electricians.

I converted my Rockwell mill to a single phase motor years ago. I have been running it with the original drum switch turning in one direction CCW. I would like to wire it to reverse also. These wires are not the power wires but wires attached to the motor. How can I do this with the drum switch? Thanks, neilca. Do you have a diagram of the drum switch showing the contact setup?

Most single phase motors can be reversed by interchanging 5 lead with 8 lead of the motor.

Painless Performance Products - Since 1990

Basically you will need a drum switch with enough contacts to do the job. For single phase you will need a 4 pole drum switch to be able to break both hots and to switch the leads 5 and 8 which you will need to bring from the motor to the drum switch.

You will need to post a diagram of your drum switch for anyone to be able to tell you how to wire it as there are more than one type. Thanks guys, I have a three pole drum switch.

No wonder I couldn't figure this out. I think I will leave it a one way until I have to change. Only three poles are required to perform both the motor controller and disconnect functions. First, you have to decide whether you are going to reverse the run winding or reverse the start winding.

Usually, it is best to reverse the start winding, as this makes conversion from toor from to a little easier.Forgot your Password? We welcome your comments and suggestions. It did not seem to be performing well on my table saw I just bought itso when I noticed that it was dual voltage, I thought that maybe it was wired for and I was running it on Not sure if it would run like that? I removed the wiring cover, and the wiring didn't match either diagram on the motor.

I attempted to wire it for The problem is that the low voltage diagram has a brown wire attached to terminal 3, and for it is to be insulated. I cannot find a brown wire at all. Also, there is no mention on the diagram for a yellow, and an orange wire. It does run when wired for without the brown wire, but it gets hot very quickly.

Photos attached. The photo is the way the wiring was before I made any changes.Three phase systems are extremely common in industrial and commercial settings. They can also be found in large residential complexes and appliances requiring a large amount of power. Although these systems may seem intimidating at first, a walkthrough on 3 phase wiring for dummies will help clarify the whole situation. Different regions may use different voltages, frequencies, and requirements when it comes to electrical power systems.

However, they all agree on the fact that three phases are the optimal number to bring the largest amount of power at the lowest number of conductors. It is thus very important to know how to work and be capable of troubleshooting different systems which require these connections. When we talk about three phases, we are always inferring that we are working with Alternating Current AC.

The electrical term AC simply means that the current will alternate the direction of the flow. The frequency of the current will determine the number of times the flow will be alternated per second.

AC is found in house outlets and used for most appliances in your home. Any appliance will have a number of parameters related to its electrical properties. These parameters are Voltage, Current and Power. Voltage can be taught of as the available pressure of electricity. A typical home will provide or volts depending on where you live. Current is measured in amps and is the rate of flow of electrons within a conductor.

The amount of current required will depend on the appliance. Depending on the source, this system may also have a neutral wire for returning current back to the transformer. The most common use of three-phase power is for motors. It provides a unique feature which is a rotating field in order to rotate the motor without the need of a starter circuit. This is accomplished due to the fact that each one of the three phases has a different offset.

In simple terms, the current is being alternated during a different time.A question we often get asked by our site visitors - Where can I find a wiring schematic or diagram for my ceiling fan? The truth of the matter - you may not always find the exact wiring diagram that matches up with your fan. No, no - don't get flustered or annoyed. By providing you with some of the most common wiring diagrams, you would actually be able to use these to install most fans.

You see - most fans on the market today all use a similar topology in terms of wiring. The colors might be different - but the layout of the wiring, the schematic and the way the circuit is mapped and connected - it is primarily the same. If you go onto Google and you are searching for manuals, instructions, PDFs, wiring diagrams and etc.

If you have a very popular model, sure - you may be able to find what you seek quickly and easily. However, more often than not, if your fan is not popular, you may be looking for a while. Instead of doing this, refer below to our generic wiring diagrams and instructions. If you are still not able to resolve your issue via using one of these diagrams, we recommend you take a look at our ceiling fan wiring guide by color.

This should help to alleviate any concerns related to installing your fan, troubleshooting or diagnosing a wiring related problem. Is this helpful?Forum Rules.

My understanding is that if you wire L1,2,3 to the main power, that it will turn at slow speed, and that if you short L1,2,3 together and wire L4,5,6 to the main power that it will turn at high speed. Don't want to hook it up and burn something out by accident. Google dahlander motor. Originally Posted by Mark McGrath. Do you have numbers on the wires? With numbers on the wires we may be able to help you ring them out with a Multimeter to at least narrow the choices. And double check the HP ratings. If it's half the hp on the low speed then odds are it's consequent pole I think.

A wiring diagram is a simplified standard pictorial depiction of an electrical circuit.

It reveals the elements of the circuit as streamlined forms, and also the power and signal connections in between the gadgets. A wiring diagram normally gives details concerning the relative placement and plan of tools as well as terminals on the gadgets, in order to help in structure or servicing the gadget.

A photographic diagram would certainly reveal a lot more information of the physical look, whereas a wiring diagram makes use of an extra symbolic notation to emphasize interconnections over physical appearance.

A wiring diagram is often utilized to fix issues and also making certain that the connections have been made which every little thing is existing. Variety of ao smith electric motor wiring diagram.

A wiring diagram is a type of schematic which utilizes abstract photographic icons to show all the interconnections of elements in a system. Circuitry representations are made up of two points: icons that represent the elements in the circuit, as well as lines that stand for the links in between them. Circuitry layouts generally shows the physical position of components as well as links in the constructed circuit, however not necessarily in reasoning order.

To review a wiring diagram, first you need to know exactly what fundamental components are included in a wiring diagram, as well as which pictorial symbols are utilized to represent them. The common aspects in a wiring diagram are ground, power supply, wire as well as link, result devices, buttons, resistors, logic entrance, lights, and so on.

A line represents a cord. Wires are made use of to link the components together. There should be a tale on the wiring diagram to inform you just what each shade indicates.

A series circuit is a circuit in which components are connected along a solitary path, so the present flows via one element to get to the following one. In a series circuit, voltages add up for all components connected in the circuit, and also currents are the same with all parts. A great wiring diagram needs to be technically correct and clear to read. Take care of every information. The representation must reveal the proper direction of the positive and also negative terminals of each element.

Estimated Time: Depends on experience with electric motors. Precaution: Electric motors are best serviced by an experienced electrician or knowledgeable technician. Changes in the wiring of an electric motor should only be made after the electric motor circuit has been identified and turned OFF and Tagged.

I would suggest visiting the Google Groups page where there is some discussion about Robbins Myers motor wiring. What if I have two v motors which operate at 14amps?

I cannot run them on a single 20amp circuit. However, I have a volt 4 wire circuit which can handle much more amperage.

If I was to wire one pole of each motor to the neutral and the remaining pole each to a separate hot wire Having two v powers from one circuit would that power each motor and not bust the amperage limit? Also, will there be any back-EMF effects through the neutral which is shared? Hi Timothy, Using a multi-wire 4wire circuit for two volt motors would depend on the type of motors that would be connected and the application. However, due to the amperage of the volt motors as described, and the possibility of overloading a shared neutral it would be best to install two separate circuits, one dedicated circuit for each motor.

I am replacing the unit with a volt EC motor. Can I use the existing wiring circuit use one leg to power the new equipment?

Did not want to increase customer costs with new volt circuit home run. Hi Ed, If the existing circuit is dedicated, and the amperage is within the specs of the new motor then it can be converted to be volt at the panel and at the motor connections. However, you should understand that the volt motor will require more amperage, and this may affect the performance of the unit.

In cases such as this it is best to replace the motor with one of the same specs to make sure the unit is left in OEM condition. This may keep you out of a potential problem with the customer in the future, plus you will not have to make any wiring changes.
